"Fox dung!"
Sootstripe groaned irritably as she nosed her way through the plants and rooted shrubbery that inhabited Tenderfoot Peak. The young Medicine Cat had been on a mission to find more borage leaves for her stock, but so far she had only found one measly plant that harbored almost nothing. She cursed herself silently. She should have seen this coming. Those elusive leaves were nearly impossible to find on StoneClan territory. She did find more chervil, however; and quite a bit of it. That was good news for the soon to be kitting queens and the apprentices complaining about bellyache. She had made sure to gather more bindweed as well.
Her ears fell flat with discouragement. Borage leaves were exactly what she needed right now. There were other substitutes, but none quite so effective. At least it provided a fairly steady distraction from the happenings in StoneClan.
Her heart ached sadly at the thought of her friend Amberstar. Their young leader had just passed recently, far too soon. Amberstar had just been made leader less than three moons prior; but she suffered from fatal injuries that even StarClan couldn't breathe life into. Sootstripe loved her cliffside territory, but her time serving StoneClan had taught her just how dangerous it could be as well. Many cats had fallen to their deaths on her Clan's territory, and Amberstar was another unfortunate casualty. All it took was one unsure paw step and you would be plummeting hundreds of fox-lengths to the jagged stones below, and no amount of lives will repair you. Herself and Bluestorm had been the cats the morning patrol had contacted immediately upon Amberstar's slip, and both the she-cats had dropped everything they were doing to come assist. Sootstripe grabbed a pouch of herbs; just in case there was a chance Amberstar was alive. Despite the Warrior's warning she refused to believe there was nothing she could do to save her Leader, who still held all nine of her newly aquired lives. By the time they were able to get down to her she had been gone for some time. The young Medicine Cat didn't take it well.
Sootstripe was also the one who completed the finalization on Amberstar's body for burial, and in the short time she had spent with the fiesty Leader during her life time they had developed a close friendship. It was incredibly hard on her to see her prior Leader's mangled remains. She imagined that Bluestar was feeling the same. Bluestorm had been the Clan Deputy, and was likely taking the death of their young leader just as severely as she was. 'I suppose I will be spending a lot of time with her as well.' Her odd colored gaze scanned the clearing as she tried to multitask with her thoughts and search for herbs as well. 'I should speak with her when I return to camp.'
The cream and ash she-cat scrambled up onto a boulder, using it as leverage to get up a tricky half cliff. Her balance was impecable, but she had found herself double checking her footing since Amberstar's incident. Her previous Leader's fall had been on a more dangerous path on their land, but she didn't want the Clan to loose anyone else. They hadn't even had a chance to announce Amberstar's death at a gathering yet. The wounds were still fresh. The last few moons had been a huge struggle for StoneClan.
'There's also a matter of the prophecy I recieved,' Sootstripe's thoughts reminded her. 'Amberstar said to keep it quiet. But Bluestar is the Leader now, and she might see things differently.' Her paws gripped onto the cliffside with extreme expertise as she slipped around a steep edge to get to the other side of Tenderfoot peak. It was a shortcut only StoneClan cats would ever take. Her mind continued to ramble as she padded into the more lush areas of the cliffs. 'After all, the leader deserves to know.'
