The camp was quiet as Ravenstar trudged over to the tall trees that were the entrance to LeafClan. Her emerald gaze danced across her medicine cat before she began scaling the large redwoods trunk. Her claws gripped the bark effortlessly; twenty six moons of life had perfected her climbing skills. She knew she could take the easier route through the medicine cat's secret entrance, but truth be told the spunky she-cat enjoyed the feeling of her claws gripping the flesh of the tree trunk. Ferretstar had taught her to be enthusiastic about things, even if they seemed to be a hindrance. The thought of her departed mentor and leader sent a pang of sadness through her. She was just returning from her life giving ceremony, and she had been given the opportunity to see him again, as well as her mother Foxsong. As she tore her way up the tree, she thought passively about her brother Owlfeather. She knew he wasn't thrilled about her taking leadership, but she would always love him no matter how strained things had been for them. She wanted to tell him everything she had experienced, to tell him everything she had seen and everything their mother had said. Ravenstar's ears fell flatly as she remembered the rule. She wasn't allowed to speak of what she had heard or seen, even to her medicine cat.
As she pulled herself up onto the branches of the main camp, her gaze strayed to the rising sun. The light was casting hues of purple and pink onto the horizon. She sighed, curling her tail over her paws as she settled onto a thick branch; one she had claimed as her own, even as an apprentice. Some of the cats were tucked within the hollows of the tree trunks, while others were splayed happily on other branches, dreaming sweet dreams about chasing mice or hunting rabbits.
There was still other matters to attend to before she would be able to get a good rest. The sun was steadily rising, and she would need to choose a deputy before sundown. Ferretstar had lost his life during an evening patrol, so it was already too late for her to pick a Deputy by sundown the previous night. Her ears fell flat against her head. Ravenstar had no friends. All she had was Owlfeather at this point... And as much as she loved her brother, she knew she couldn't pick him for her deputy. There was no doubt in her mind that Owlfeather was a strong, loyal tom. But her brother harbored a lot of anger and resentment within him. He was prone to irrational behavior at times, and she even found herself fearing his wrath. Owlfeather's inner turmoil could very easily bring LeafClan to its death if he were to become leader.
'Not that I'm any better,' her inner voice reminded her. 'I'm inexperienced. And I know I'm not the only one who thinks so.' Her emerald eyes scanned the many sleeping faces of her Warriors. A few eyes were slowly peeking open; some staring at her judgmentally. Her dark pelt bristled uneasily as she dragged her tongue across her fur persistently. Settling in again, the new leader sighed heavily. Her own eyes were droopy with sleep as she allowed the world to fade away around her briefly. It would be a short rest.
Despite how little she slept, the new Leader dreamt. Her world slipped into stars and grassy fields, and it wasn't long before she recognized where she was. The memories of her recent life-giving ceremony were still very, very fresh in her mind, and as the StarClan world began to settle around her, she allowed herself to settle back on her flank as she waited for what was to come. Slowly, the cats of StarClan began to take shape around her once more. She pondered silently about how soon she was back in the StarClan realm, but chose to brush it off as she eagerly scanned the many faces around her in hopes of seeing her mother or Ferretstar.
She got her wish. The starry cats moved aside, allowing one of their ranks to pass by. The cream colored tom emerged, tall and proud as usual as her old mentor and Leader padded towards her. She smiled at him, straightening her stance respectfully. Her smile fell as his facial features became more apparent. Ferretstar looked troubled.
"Ferretstar, I..." Ravenstar trailed off, her gaze falling to her paws. She felt scared. She had never felt scared in her mentors presence before... But this was different. Something was wrong. Very, very wrong.
Ferretstar had never looked scared before. He had worried, sure. But she had never seen actual fear on his face.
